On Thursday, July 30th, Greenwood School District 50’s reopening plan for the 2020-2021 school year was officially approved by the State Department of Education. District 50 was one of 25 school districts that received confirmation of their approval from State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman.
“I am extremely excited that our reopening plan has become a reality,” Superintendent Steve Glenn stated. “As I have stated many times before, this decision was not made lightly. All of our stakeholders have been a part of this process via emails, surveys, and virtual town halls. We truly feel that this plan will allow our students and staff to have a safe and successful opening to the school year.”
In order to receive approval, SC school districts were required to meet key criteria set by the State Department of Education. This criteria included offering both a virtual and face-to-face instructional option, a time frame to review plans to move to full five days face-to-face instruction, and establishing strategies to provide high quality instruction and a wide range of student services.
District 50 provided parents with three instructional options on a Back to School Commitment Form that was completed last week. Parents were given the option for their child(ren) returning to school Traditionally (5 days face-to-face), A/B Model, or Virtually. Over 8,600 responses were received on the form. Responses showed that 44.1% of parents wanted their child(ren) to receive Traditional instruction, 33.6% of parents wanted their child(ren) to receive virtual instruction, and 21% of parents wanted their child(ren) to receive A/B instruction. Each option is a semester long commitment. The district and its schools are currently working to finalize responses received on the form. The first day of school will be Monday, August 24th.
